The words bamal, burra, badu mean 'earth, sky, water' in Dharug, the language of the original inhabitants of the Sydney region.
Many of my favourite places and favourite things to photograph remain relatively unspoilt today only because of the custodianship of the Dharug and Eora peoples over tens of thousands of years. Jakelin Troy (1993) gives a good description of the Sydney language(s) -- the source of many of words borrowed into Australian English, including wallaby, wombat, and warratah.
